A transcription generates traffic and converts to sales
Many people spend valuable minutes (if not hours!) every day watching videos online, especially on social media. From a business perspective, it makes good sense to produce videos and content for Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, etc. But while videos get more views than text, search engines still respond only to written content.
Google and the other tech giants can't yet decode and push video content. Before they can 'understand' and rank your content in order to generate traffic to your website (and ultimately convert to sales), you’ll need to transcribe the audio to text. That way services like Google will be able to direct customers to your website when they search for relevant keywords.
What does transcription mean?
Transcription is simply the act of transcribing (i.e. writing out) speech according to some more or less fixed conventions. If you have an audio or video file with speech that you would like to have transcribed, you should order a transcription.
Once the text has been transcribed, it can be translated into one or more of the over 800 language combinations we offer.
We work with the most advanced transcription software available in order to increase efficiency and ensure the best value for money.
We can also help if you need translation of subtitles. Our linguists have access to the most advanced intelligent software available.
The beauty of this professional software is that it automatically transcribes the audio and generates time codes.
Our professional linguists then post-edit both the text and the time codes to ensure they match what is actually being said. They’ll also make sure that the transcribed text fits onto a single image page or is otherwise broken up into short, easy-to-read segments.
How long does transcription take?
Transcription is a complex and often cumbersome process, and there are several factors that affect how long a transcription will take. Many of our freelance linguists and project managers have years of transcription experience. Whereas transcribing an interview used to be a rather tedious manual process, today our linguists can save time with the help of intelligent transcription software that automatically generates a rough draft of the transcript. Our linguists then post-edit the transcript and make decisions about what to add and what to omit.
Full verbatim or clean verbatim transcription?
Spoken language is fundamentally different from written language and is often filled with small errors, repetitions, self-corrections and pronunciation mistakes – it’s tempting to consider the many ways that the same thing could have been said more accurately with different or fewer words. Yet that's not the point when transcribing. A transcription should simply decode what is being said, so that readers are not confused.
Mumbling, dialects, accents, background noise and poor audio quality can all sow doubt about what is being said. So it’s essential to have a set of sharp and experienced ears to decipher the numerous sounds and convert them to text.
Spoken language phenomena such as filler words and hesitations (“ums and ahs”), errors, repetitions and other potentially distracting elements can muddle the meaning and interfere with the reading experience.
You can trust Us to make professional choices about what to include and what to omit.
A “full verbatim” transcription, meaning that the speech is reproduced word for word, includes transcription of the accompanying small spoken language phenomena (e.g. pauses for thought, hesitation), as these can have a strong influence on how a statement can be interpreted.
With Us you can choose the precise level of detail you need, depending on what you find most valuable for your transcript.
The vast majority of our customers simply need to reproduce the content without unnecessary spoken language phenomena.
Below, we have outlined some of the main differences between spoken and written language:
Spoken language 🗣️ | Written language ✍️ |
Loose structure | (Semi)-composed structure |
Many words (repetitions, errors, filler words, etc.) | Economic word choice |
Implicit, spontaneous, meandering language | Concise and coherent |
Incomplete/interrupted sentences | Complete sentences, compound sentences |
Many 'ands' and 'buts' | Fewer 'ands' and 'buts' |
Short words and specific terms | Longer, more abstract words and conceptual terms |
Fewer subordinate clauses | Many subordinate clauses |
Comprehensive interview transcription services
We also have experience transcribing interviews. Interviews with multiple participants often present a high level of complexity, since the natural rhythm of conversational speech usually leads to speech overlap as people interrupt each other or begin speaking at the same time.
When transcribing an interview, it’s also important to consider the level of detail with which the interview should be transcribed.
Should you require a high level of detail in your transcribed text, e.g. indications of laughter, hesitation, etc., we’re happy to offer a quote for this service.
How do we approach transcription?
Professional transcription requires unparalleled levels of patience and skill. Our linguists have been thoroughly trained in the fundamentals of transcription as well as the use of Our transcription tools.
There is a greater margin of error with transcription tasks, since mumbling, dialect, accent, background noise – or even poor sound quality – can all cast doubt on what is being said.
That's why we always have at least 2 sets of ears and eyes on a task, so we can better evaluate passages with unclear or unintelligible speech.
In very rare cases, it may be necessary to consult with the customer or the person speaking on the video.
